The recent spate of violence against Asian Americans has garnered the attention of the nation and the White House. At this critical juncture, it is imperative to raise awareness and understanding of the situation and to respond appropriately to ensure the safety of those in our Asian American communities.
Given the circumstances, friction is mounting between our Asian and Black communities creating an urgency to escalate productive dialogues. We will bring highly respected leaders from the Asian and Black communities together to lend perspective and present solutions on how to improve community public safety and underscore the necessity for allyship among all our communities.

About Our Panelists
Speaker
Carl Chan is the Director of Claremont Development, an East Bay real estate company. In addition, Mr. Chan also serves on the Board of Directors of Asian Health Services, providing health, social and advocacy services for all in need. Mr Chan is often referred to as the “Mayor” of Oakland Chinatown due to his leadership and support in the revitalization and public safety advocacy efforts through organizations like the Oakland Chinatown Chamber of Commerce and the Neighborhood Crime Prevention Council.

Lateefah Simon is a 20-year veteran organizer for racial justice in Oakland and the Bay Area. She has been the President of the Akonadi Foundation since 2016. That same year—driven by the death of Oscar Grant—she ran and was elected to the Bay Area Rapid Transit Board of Directors, of which she now serves as President. Lateefah is also a member of California State University's Board of Trustees and frequently turned to by state officials for strategic advice on policy matters related to racial justice. Lateefah received the MacArthur Foundation "Genius" Award in 2003—making her the youngest woman ever to receive the award at that time.

Dr. Russell Jeung is the Professor and Chair of the Asian American Studies Department at San Francisco State University. He co-created the Stop AAPI Hate reporting center together with leaders from the Asian Pacific Policy and Planning Council (A3PCON) and Chinese for Affirmative Action (CAA). Stop AAPI Hate tracks cases of discrimination against Asian Americans across the nation. In fighting the racialization of COVID-19, the group employs several measures, including reporting incidents of hate to organize for change, community resistance, “flipping political rhetoric” and countering media.

Cynthia Choi is the Co-Executive Director of Chinese for Affirmative Action, a 50 year-old community based civil rights organization based in San Francisco which aims to advance racial and economic justice, education equity and immigrant rights. Most recently she was the Vice President of Philanthropic Partnerships at Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders in Philanthropy where she was responsible for leveraging strategic opportunities to advance AAPI social justice issues and philanthropic investments.
Moderator
Momo Chang is a freelance journalist and alumni coordinator for Oakland Voices, a program of Maynard Institute for Journalism Education. Her work focuses on healthcare, immigration, education, Asian American communities, food, and culture. She is a former staff writer at the Oakland Tribune. Her reporting has appeared in the San Francisco Chronicle, Wired, and Hyphen, among other outlets.
